In a land heavily influenced by fae magic, the Land of Fairy, it was a time of great political stress and tension. The centuries-long war between Queen Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and ruler of Winkie, and Queen Glinda, Glinda the Good Witch and ruler of Munchkinland, had escalated into violence once again. The country of La Verne, thrown into turmoil by the death of Queen “The Evil Queen” Grimhilde, debates joining Germonia under the rule of Queen Snow White. The Kingdom of Najera is still reeling, restless, and without a leader as their former King, King Edward, was executed for crimes against his only child, the Princess Daphne. The air seemed thick with promised violence, when the mermaid princess, Ariel, was found dead on the shores of Tirulia.

The discovery of her body sparked an investigation, and the tragic, sordid tale came to be known far and wide. Ariel, daughter of King Triton, ruler of the northern Seas, made a deal with Ursula the Sea Witch, ruler of the southern seas. The mermaid princess gave her voice in exchange for legs in the hopes of pursuing the land-bound Prince Eric, a man she had fallen in love with at first sight. The young prince and princess enjoyed a short-lived dalliance that ended with Prince Eric spurning the mermaid princess and marrying a noblewoman named Viola. Upon his marriage, Prince Eric was crowned King of Tirulia.

After her rejection by the now King Eric, Princess Ariel cast herself into the sea, drowning herself in the waters she once called home. King Triton, upon discovering Ursula’s enablement of his youngest daughter’s foolishness invaded Ursula’s seas and issued orders to attack any ships that he deemed had traveled too far into his waters. Learning that King Triton had discovered his rejection of Princess Ariel, King Eric shored up Tirulia’s defenses and armies in preparation for an attack from the seas.

Unfortunately for King Eric, the ruler of the neighboring country of Brittany, King Bluebeard, took this increased defense as a threat; or at least that was his excuse. Brittany invaded Tirulia. Upon King Bluebeard’s invasion of Tirulia, surrounding countries began to feel anxious that they may be invaded or attacked.

The only place seemingly untouched by the tensions of global politics and imminent war was Toy Island. An island full of fun and sin untouched by the unrest of the mainland.
